Project Goal
Create a typeface inspired by Victoria, B.C. that is expressive, yet remains legible for a wide range of applications. The font should capture the area's spirit by using historical/contemporary references. Approaches can include customizing an existing font, or hand-drawing letterforms.
Project Solution
Garryana is based in the Oak Bay District in Victoria, B.C. Oak Bay’s wooden signage was an initial inspiration for the letterforms, as well as the powerful presence of nature in this area. The name “Garryana” comes from the species name of the Garry Oak Tree, which Oak Bay is named after. The hand-drawn shape of the letterforms reflects the honest and cheerful spirit of the community.
